What are the requirements to carry a concealed weapon?

Individuals in Michigan who wish to carry a concealed firearm must submit an application. There are specific requirements they must meet to get approval.

Anyone carrying a concealed weapon without the proper permit could face criminal charges. The requirements are rather basic, but they are specific.

Age and citizenship

To apply, you must be at least 21 years old. You also must be a US citizen or a lawful immigrant.

Residency

You also must be a resident of Michigan. The residency requirements include living in the state for six months before you submit an application. You also qualify if you have a Michigan ID, vote in the state, are an active duty military member in the state or with a permanent residence in the state.

Waiver for residency

The state will waive the residency requirement in emergency situations. These include if you have a protection order issued for yourself or if a sheriff believes you have a reason to fear for your safety. You also can bypass the requirement if you hold a valid permit from another state when you move to Michigan.

Other requirements

In addition to the age, citizenship and residency requirements, you must complete a safety course. You also have to go through checks to ensure you are of sound mental health and do not have any criminal history that would bar you from firearm ownership. A dishonorable discharge from the military will also prevent you from applying.

You must go through the official process to legally carry a firearm in public concealed. If you do not secure the permit, you are violating the law.
