3 Michigan cities among highest rate of divorce in the nation

A recent study identified the 25 cities in the United States with the highest divorce rates. Three Michigan cities were on the list, with one of them coming in at the sixth-highest rate of divorce.

The researchers say there are trends that may predict the likelihood of people ending their marriage. This information can help those who are unhappy in their marriages.

Jackson, Muskegon and Port Huron

The first Michigan city to show up on the list is Jackson, which came in at number six. More than 18 percent of the population there is divorced.

The other two Michigan cities on the list are Muskegon at number 14, with 18.2 percent, and Port Huron at number 20, with 17.9 percent.

Researchers only included people who were legally divorced and had not remarried, which means those numbers could be higher.

Here are other interesting facts from the research:

  • In the U.S., nearly 11 percent of adults are divorced and not remarried
  • Religious communities seem to have lower populations of divorced people
  • Cities with a high divorce rate often have fewer legal hurdles to get a divorce

Michigan is a no-fault divorce state, meaning parties do not have to prove grounds for a divorce, which can make getting a divorce easier. One other correlation is that cities with a lower median income were more likely to have a higher divorce rate, which seems to suggest that struggles with money could be a factor.
