Many different issues contribute to violence within a person’s home and personal life. Anger management issues often rank near the top of the list.
Though anger management issues do not excuse the behavior that can lead to domestic violence, they can help explain a lot of the troubles that plague the individuals who struggle with it.
Outward vs. inward anger
WebMD discusses anger issues, a very real problem that affects numerous people. First, anger management and anger issues in general often manifest in different ways.
Outward anger, for example, often results in a person verbally or physically expressing anger by lashing out at others. A person with this form of anger may break things, curse, yell, or physically harm others.
Inward anger, on the other hand, will often manifest in the form of depression, negative thoughts, negative internal dialogue and even self-harm. Many of these individuals will deny themselves things they enjoy as a form of punishment, and could even self-deny necessities like food and water.
Passive aggression serves as a third form of anger. This often manifests as sarcasm, barbed remarks, degrading comments, or an outright refusal to communicate with other people.
Improperly expressed anger
If expressed properly, anger is a perfectly healthy human emotion. However, people with anger issues go beyond this.
These people will often get angry over small things, have excessive amounts of anger in inappropriate situations, feel angry often, and of course, verbally or physically lashing out at others.
These all indicate the possibility of anger issues that should get addressed, lest more violence occurs in the future.
