Thinking about divorce during lockdown? You are not alone

It has been about two months since the coronavirus began upending life as we know it here in Michigan. During that time, we have spent many days and nights at home with family, as we look to flatten the curve and get through this pandemic.

For some married residents, this lockdown has pushed marital issues to the forefront. It has made individuals realize it may be time for a change. If you are one of these people, you are not alone.

According to a report from ABC News, there has been a huge uptick in divorce interest across the country. That includes taking steps to file for separation, as well as early inquiries to begin the process.

There are a few notable reasons for this sudden surge:

  • Couples are living in close quarters, without space to get away from each other
  • Many partners are experiencing unprecedented financial stress
  • Some people have simply realized they want something different

All told, this means many experts are expecting a flood of divorces once the courts fully open in the future.

Filing in Michigan

Here in Michigan, certain family court filings can be moved forward. Through video conferencing and online tools, it is possible for some proceedings to advance. However, the ban on many in-person activities in courtrooms can be a roadblock.

The courts are beginning to eye a gradual reopening, but as we’ve all learned, this situation is fluid and will remain that way for a while. In the meantime, those with questions about what is possible can reach out to us at The Rubinstein Law Firm.
