Drug, firearm arrests highlight need for effective criminal defense

Serious crimes carry significant consequences, and the punishment can impact a person’s entire life. Even after a convicted person has served jail time or paid fines, he or she may face damage to their professional or personal reputation or have difficulty securing a loan.

This is why it is important to consider criminal defense against any criminal charges, but especially those for more serious crimes. Two recent arrests related to drug and firearm possession here in Michigan highlight that need.

It began with a failure to signal

According to police, the arrests happened at night on a state highway. An officer claims he saw a passenger vehicle suddenly pull over to the side of the road without signaling. The officer felt compelled to run the car’s license tag through the police computer system, and he says the tag came back as fake. The officer followed the vehicle and says it pulled over onto a lawn before he could initiate a traffic stop.

The officer says he found two firearms and drugs in the vehicle. The driver, a man, and another occupant, a woman, were arrested and charged with possession of cocaine. The man was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance. The woman was additionally charged with possession of a firearm without a permit. These kinds of charges could result in jail time for both people if they are convicted.

When individuals are charged with a serious crime here in Michigan, they may feel as though no one is on their side. It is important to note that every person accused of a criminal act is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

How to get help

Those facing charges may need a strong criminal defense strategy to prove their innocence or minimize the impact that conviction may have upon their lives. An experienced criminal law attorney may be an accused person’s best chance at achieving the best possible outcome.
